Most scientists believe that global warming is due to an increase in the atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide. Out of all the possible causes of global warming, it’s also the only cause we have any control over. Whatever your belief, why take a chance on destroying the only planet we have? Below is a list of actions you can take to save our planet, and to save money in the process. The list has been prioritized for you, starting with easy and inexpensive and ending with harder, and more expensive. Just start from the top and work your way down!
Recycle
The average household will save almost 110 kilograms (2,400 pounds) of carbon dioxide emission a year just by recylcing half of household waste.
Use One Compact Fluorescent Bulb
Replace only a single regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb to save about 68 kilograms (150 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions a year.
Use A Low Flow Showerhead
Low flow showerheads can save about 160 kilograms (350 pounds) of carbon dioxide emission every year.
Plant A Tree
Plants consume carbon dioxide, the primary global warming atmospheric gas. One shade tree can absorb about 50 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Over the average tree’s lifetime of 40 years, a tree can reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide by about 1 ton (915 kilograms) over it’s lifetime.
Maintain Your Car
By keeping your tires properly inflated and your air filter clean, you can save anywhere between 110 kilograms (250 pounds) to 475 kilograms (1050 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions each and every year.
Drive Less
You could walk to the shops instead of driving, or dust off your bike if you think the shops are too far to walk too. You also help your health and that’s a big bonus.
Lower Your Thermostat
Leave your thermostat a little warmer in summer, and a little cooler in winter so your heating system doesn’t consume so much power.
Insulate Your House
This improves the efficiency of the heating within your house, and you may find that you won’t need to heat or cool your house as often.
You could establish a greenroof by installing special soils and vegetation on your roof. This arrangement works as natural house installation and reducing the need for unnatural heating and cooler systems.
Use solar powered garden products
There are solar powered lights and fountains that recharge each day, and don’t require installation by a qualified electrician. These devices are a great way to reduce your passive energy consumption.
Swap powered yard tools for human powered tools. Instead of lawn mowers, weed eaters, and leaf blowers, try push mowers, hand clippers, and rakes.
Introduce a diverse range of plants in to your backyard
Doing so will help facilitate the important connections between food sources and pollinators. In turn, plants will flourish and continue to consume carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Compost garden and kitchen waste
Compositing will help avoid the use of process intensive chemical fertilizers.
